Belarus grants asylum to fugitive Polish judge wanted on spying allegations
- AP
Belarus has granted asylum to a former Polish judge who faced espionage charges at home following his defection in May to the Kremlin-allied country. Both fugitive Tomasz Szmydt and Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus' autocratic President, have alleged that Szmydt fell victim to political repression in Poland, an EU and NATO member that has vocally supported Ukraine. Warsaw put Szmydt on a wanted list in May and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called him a traitor. Szmydt's defection has brought Poland into focus as a key target for Russian intelligence activity. Warsaw has been working to determine how harmful his knowledge of any classified information might be.

Afraid of losing the US-Canada trade pact, Mexico alters its laws and removes Chinese parts
- By MARIA VERZA - Associated Press
Mexico has been taking a bashing for allegedly serving as a conduit for Chinese parts and products into North America. Officials here are terrified that a re-elected Donald Trump or politically struggling Justin Trudeau could simply expel their country from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Mexico's ruling Morena party is so afraid its has gone on a campaign to get companies to replace Chinese parts with locally made ones. And its legislators are consciously tweaking the wording of major laws to try to make them compatible with the trade pact's language. Mexico hopes the rules of the trade pact would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away.

Even with access to blockbuster obesity drugs, some people don't lose weight
- By JONEL ALECCIA - AP Health Writer
Most people taking popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight have shed significant pounds. But obesity experts say that roughly 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not see robust results with the new medications. The response to the drugs varies from person to person and can depend on genetics, hormones and differences in how the brain regulates energy. Undiagnosed medical conditions and some drugs can prevent weight loss. Experts say it can take experimentation to help so-called nonresponders find results.

The pope will visit Corsica Dec. 15 after skipping Paris reopening of Notre Dame
- By NICOLE WINFIELD - Associated Press
Pope Francis will travel to the Mediterranean island of Corsica on Dec. 15. It's his third visit to France that avoids the capital and all the pomp and protocol that accompanies a proper state visit. The one-day visit to the French island region was confirmed Saturday by the Vatican. While Francis will meet with President Emmanuel Macron at the airport before returning to Rome, the trip is in some way a snub of the French leader. He had invited Francis to travel to Paris the previous weekend to preside over the grand reopening of Notre Dame cathedral, rebuilt after the devastating 2019 fire.
