Yeah, I'm not sure where the hate comes from. Possibly because it's been unanimously heralded as the acceptable Mario for non Mario people and non Mario people don't like that... My guess it comes from a knowledge made common in Internet era that DID YOU KNOW MARIO 2 IS NOT A MARIO GAME AT ALL BUT RATHER A PORT OF JERKY JERKY PENCIL IT'S NOT A REAL MARIO WE'VE BEEN ROBBED et cetera.
It's a history revisionism, same why Sonic Adventure went from solid 8-9 to almost zero. Some cucks just can't have fun and won't let others have it.

Well, being that you were a middle schooler when Dreamcast came out, you have a different opinion. My friends and I were highschool seniors. We thought SA was borderline unplayable. One friend thought we were being harsh but even he had to admit that there are large swaths of the game where Sonic just moves forward on his own with no input. And that c**t even liked the shitty Berserk game and kept saying the sprite thing was voiced by Jim Cummings then was feeling kinda dumb when he beat the game and there was no Jim Cummings in the credits.
You call it bait?Yeah, well sa1 isn't that great, it's still a fun arcadey 3d sonic romp, but I enjoy spinball and 3d blast more... Most of the time. The difference between Retrospect and revisionism is as fine of a line as the one between genius and insanity. I see just as much sa1 hate here as I do oot hate tbqh senpai
is obviously bait. No one liked 3D Blast.
Holy shit, I thought it was a burger too.

>there are large swaths of the game where Sonic just moves forward on his own with no input
I've played the game like 200 times but I honestly can't remember what are you talking about. There are few sequences where Sonic auto-runs, like that orca run, building in Speed Highway or water slide in Lost World, and even there, you still have to control Sonic so he won't trip on obstacle or fall into pit.
Running through loop de loops can count as "no input" I guess, but it's not like it's 90% of the game. People like to shit on homing attack but let's be honest the game could've been absolute ass to progress through without handy lock-on mechanic. Not like I want to argue with you, just noted

>the game could've been absolute ass to progress through without handy lock-on mechanic.
You're absolutely right and that's something I disagreed with my friends about, pointing out that it was first done in 3D Blast (and that game pissed me off even before I put it in my console because it came in cardboard rather than hard clamshell). But yeah, the auto runs.
>you still have to control Sonic so he won't trip on obstacle or fall into pit.
I'll have to take your word for it. I don't remember the game that much since it was literally 25 years ago, I didn't like it, so I never replayed it again. - Anonymous

Most (all?) of what you're talking about wasn't in SA which is the only 3D Sonic game I bothered with. After disliking is so much, I gave up on Sonic altogether until I tried one of the GBA games and one of the NGPC games some years later. Neither was good so I just dropped all new entries to the series completely. I like all of the hacks of the original 16 bit tetralogy I've played so far, though.
I never played Chaotix, but I did like the Crackers demo way back when -

The only problem I have with Mario 2 is Nintendos aversion to owning up to it and making it part of the lore. Why can Mario find some collectibles in a dream world stage and he and the squad all jumps weird (a la Mario 2) because it's in a dream. So easy to make a trippy dreamscape. Frick Nintendo has so much opportunities and squander them.

What? I've never heard this, nor have I heard any hate for the game in general. The closest thing to "hate" would be that it's a revision of YKDDP, but that's more from weeb elitism than an actual criticism of the underlying game.- Anonymous

It's just tendie panic that you can manufacture a certified nostalgic Nintendo classic from a cheaply rebadged game, which implies that Mario is a brand loyalty thing and not a superlative and undeniable genius gameplay thing. Therefore it needs to be shit for the tendie criticism universe to be righteous.

Kinda stupid opinion, being that SMB2 was developed by the same R&D department as SMB and built on refinements to SMB's platforming concepts. Nobody in the West would recognise or care about the IP in DDP. Yes it would have been cheaper to rebrand DDP and tap into that, still nascent, brand loyalty than develop an entirely new SMB game, and everyone would be bound to discover its origins eventually (or right away, as it happened). But the chances of selling a lot of copies was also much higher too. That's just smart business.

It, like all the other weird second installments out there of the same general era (DigDug 2, Zelda 2, Castlevania 2, Mappy 2, Final Fantasy 2 etc etc etc) were played and enjoyed but not liked as actual sequels to the games they sprouted from. That's why the third installment, if the series got one, always returned to the original formula but in suped up form (Mario 3, LttP, Castlevania 3, Final Fantasy 3 etc etc etc).
I've had multiple conversations with friends about this back in the day (excluding FF2 and 3, of course, since we didn't know about them at the time) and the opinion was unanimous: it was good but it wasn't Mario. Zelda 2 was good but it wasn't Zelda. Castlevania 2 was the only one that caused disagreement. I liked it. My best friend at the time did not. And our other friends were generally ambivalent.
I find it hard to believe that our opinions could be unique. - Anonymous

People underestimate/ignore how much SMB2 influenced and helped push forward the series.
It introduced many enemies that became recurrent enemies, some very iconic like Shyguys, it introduced picking up & throwing enemies/items (ok, technically this comes from arcade Mario Bros, but this was a neat way to bring this mechanic back, also returning from Mario Bros is the POW block), it introduced the Key item, it just is an awesome game. The addition of the run button from Yume Kojo to SMB2/USA also makes a difference.
And really, Yume Kojo might just have started development as a Mario game anyway. It all came full circle.Mario 2's levels really pushed for more diversity as well. Yes... they did Desert twice. Still its very much desert, then there's ice and having a forest vs plains. It really was a step in the mario 3 direction.

I honestly didn't understand why anyone would watch any eceleb for any hobby at all. My homeboard is Ganker. There was a long obsession with ecelebs there some time back. They'd post a whole bunch of different dudes and I would have no idea who tf they were. Now, I know them by name and face, I guess, but having never watched any of their videos, I've no clue what they sound like. And even so, these motherfrickers are posting about intimate details about the ecelebs' lives.
I don't know any /vr/ ecelebs nor any Ganker nor Ganker nor Ganker nor any others.
I especially don't understand let's plays or twitch streams. Why in the frick would I watch someone playing a game and talking when I could just play the fricking thing for my own damn self?unironically better than SMB3 and SMW
What did you think was better? I didn't care for how short it was but I like character selection. It gave you ways to beat stages differently depending on the character you used. You could, for example, skip the cave in 1-1 if you use Luigi or fly to that backdoor things in that other level (4-1?) with the princess.
SMB3 had power ups, which are always fun.

SMB1 was the only real canon in the West apart maybe from MB. That made 2 a very different game in look and feel to what was known. SMB3 and SMW (quite different, dont know what you are thinking there) abandoned most of the SMB2 'innovations' and are much more like incremental improvements on SMB.

It made sense to just assume Nintendo would experiment a lot with their properties and make huge changes between titles in the 80s-90s. Same with other companies making games on the system at the time.
Zelda 2 was just nothing like the first at all.
Bubble Bobble sequel was two kids puking rainbows at things
Star Tropics 2 was time traveling with rayguns
TMNT 2 was an arcade beatemup
Castlevania 2 was a semi RPGIt was not hard to just assume Nintendo just made a totally different game and called it mario since lots of sequels did that.
