From what I've read, when you sign up for it you essentially get a "virtual PC" that you can connect to Steam or whatever and install your games on. This virtual PC is presumably on a server totally loaded with high-end gear that's running the game as fast as it probably can be run. So the question comes down to is your internet connection + their server faster than your computer's hardware. If your on a PC that's kinda old and you have a really good internet connection, then the answer is probably yes.
I didn't see this discussion originally, and I think I may have ended up on the high end of hours spent with it.
You pretty much covered how it works I think. Connection quality on your end is really the deciding factor on how well it does / doesn't work. Consistency of connection quality is probably 2nd most important, if your end falters it'll lag, then blur, and then you get a couple cracks at it trying to reconnect at a high enough rate. If that fails, out you go.
One possible downside for those interested in it: you'll be playing vanilla, because while there is apparently a process that let's you use mods with at least some games, it's so unwieldy that it's pretty much unusable (involves reinstalling those mods before every session, doing so in just the right sequence of logging in, etc etc).
Also worth knowing: it has a fairly unforgiving timer for inactivity. Somewhere around 10 minutes or so, it'll end your session & log you out. Particularly problematic if you're playing something with no manual saving.
That said, it's the only reason I've been able to play HOI4, EU4, and most recently Rimworld. I'm north of 300 hours on those so, as you might gather from that, when it works it works great. And it's playable probably 80-90 percent of the time even with my mediocre at best connection. But you will have occasions where it's frustrating. (including HOI4 being "unavailable" from their end for the past week, without any real explanation, and a previous instance where Oxygen Not Required wouldn't run for me because they didn't have a non-DLC version installed on their servers, only a full-DLC version ... meaning I couldn't actually DO anything since I hadn't bought the whole nine yards. I ended up refunding that particular Steam purchase)

To be honest, I haven't made it to the endgame to find out. More fool me for not actually reading up on the game and buying into the hype, but I'm struggling to think of a game I thought I'd love that I've been more disappointed in. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to it, just not what I was looking for.

Again, totally more fool me on this but I didn’t particularly enjoy Endless Legend either. I thought from the early stuff I’d seen that it was supposed to be a more cerebral Civ game. Bought based on hype and not doing due diligence and it’s just not a format I enjoy. I find it boring and constricting.

Random thing for this playing Humankind, picked it up from a quill LP video.
Apparently the AI makes a beeline for every curiosity (or whatever they call their equivalent to goody huts), but if you use Auto-Explore then your units will do the same and at least be on equal footing.
He explains how Fog of War is frequently turned off by a lot of game AI but in the case of Humankind they use that sight to grab anything they can (UNlike a lot of games AI).

So a much anticipated update to No Man's Sky today-I'm sure many of you have noticed that most/all planets do not have much of a populated feel to them. Well no longer, Frontiers update brings cities and lots of other cool stuff to the game.
I watch a couple streamers for No Man's Sky content JasonPlays and SurvivalBob, and both have already posted videos. I really like JasonPlays way of going through the patch notes to see the changes. Here is the video for Frontiers:

I have been playing this over the last couple of days. It is ok so far. The number of different classes you can play is actually a bit overwhelming. I originally started with a Fighter-type "sword and board" main. Once I realized that early on you get several martial type members of your party to start, I decided to restart with a wizard. Going with a low level wizard feels almost like a hard-mode, because you are very weak to begin. I am playing with custom settings, but I basically turned everything to normal rule set (no buffs either way, standard crits, etc). The only thing a didn't turn on was over-encumbered slows your movement. Encumbrance rules suck.

I was worried about that, because I hated the kingdom part of the original. I have turned it on my current play through though because people are saying you give up many quests if you don't. It sort of sucks you have to deal with worthless waist of time content to get to the content you want. I never finished the first game because of the stupid kingdom system, and I am sure I will probably rage quit this one as well. I love spending $50 I know I am going to end up hating.
bhlloy
09-07-2021, 07:45 PM
Yeah, agreed. It also means that you can’t advance the game until your armies have cleared a path to the next set of areas, in addition to certain quests never showing up. An awful design decision even if they didn’t implement it like they tacked it on based on some code they found in a strategy sim from the mid 90s.

So a new game popped up on my radar today-Dice Legacy. There are several dice board games out there right now, not sure if this is connected or not, but it looks like an interesting mix of tabletop board games, RPG, and Survival games. Due out in early Sept:
RATING / ESRB / A (https://www.gog.com/game/dice_legacy?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=20210719_nl_Weekly_Sale_EN&utm_term=EN&track_click=1&link_id=dice_legacy_game)
So this leaves early access on Steam today. Nookrium had an early look at it, and its intriguing, combining several genres-worker placement with dice, survival, exploration, city building etc. There's some combat potential too with the exploration.

Another game leaving early access today is Rift Wizard, a traditional roguelike where your only character class choice is a wizard. You then can choose from about 125 spells, then as you go from level to level you collect mana which allow you to changes things like the amount of damage done by a spell or change from a basic summon to a more powerful summon

A large selection of Asmodee's Digital games collection on sale through the weekend making most under $10 like Scythe, Terraforming Mars, Ticket To Ride, Arkham Horror: Mother's Embrace, Blood Rage, Lord of the Rings and more. Game of Thrones is $12. Sadly this sale does not include Gloomhaven, which I suspect will be 20 or 30 percent off($25) when it leaves early access on the 20th.

So I'd be interested in folks thoughts... I love the party based RPG games where your players level up, maybe you get to add NPC's to the group off and on and they level up too... thinking the old Wasteland games.

As mentioned, Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a pretty solid 4 party member game. It is played turn based (my preference). Also Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a 6 member party game that can be turn-based or real time, and it has a really easy switch between the two. Solasta is easy to figure out and play, and Pathfinder is much tougher with many, many, many different class options. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is just a couple of years old and a bit easier to jump into than Wrath, but still more complicated than Solasta.

The suggested games are all good choices. I will throw an under-the-radar choice here-based off 3.5 RPG/D&D rules:
Low Magic Age. Still in Early Access and I haven't played in a while so not sure what has been added. Graphics are nothing special, but Adventure Mode is full of party-based RPG goodness.

I agree with all of the above. I had a blast with Solasta. I love both Divinity: Original Sin games. They are some of my favorites of this type of game. The graphics are ... well ... roguelike but it's starting off fun. I started a random campaign as a Russian tank commander in a T-34/40 in The Continuation War. I was doing well on day 1 (actually, my wingman tanks were doing most of the damage) but the Finns ambushed me and took me out. It's still early in the game he's playing, but it looks like they have replaced the town and dungeons (so far) with a road that you take via a Slay the Spire type map for various encounters. Not sure when you enter a dungeon-maybe at a boss at the end of the road? The terrific voice actor from the first game is back for the second at least

Good question. I've got a bunch queued up already. But, the holidays are coming up and I'm having a medical procedure at the end of November that will keep me down for a couple of weeks, so if I'm up to it, I'll probably have more time than normal to at least give each game a shot.

Gloomhaven is brutal, but as I get the hang of the mechanics, I am, getting much better. Seriously one of the most challenging RPGs I have played as it makes you plan very carefully and is unforgiving, even on easy mode, if you are careless. A lot of fun when you have time to really focus on the game experience.

Probably the one benefit of having the physical version is that I can make my own "house rules" so I don't horribly lose every single time.

I have been playing on easy and doing well, while still being challenged. I must say it is a very well designed game and in a genre that has been dumbed down in recent years I find it very refreshing.

Wartales entered Early Access today and is from the developers of Northgard. It's kind of like a micro version of Mount and Blade. Instead of controlling an army you control a squad of mercenaries and combat is turn based.
This game has enormous potential. It's brutally difficult and doesn't fully explain it's mechanics yet, but it's already a fun game that should just get better from here considering the work that was done on Northgard.

I find Factorio's value of 'not gonna have a sale ever, not no-way, not no-how' to be amusing in this regard. Every once in a while someone pops up with 'why is this never on sale' and gets absolutely flabbergasted/dumbfounded when they hear why.

JAG tipped me off to the first game in this series a while back, and I've been waiting for the second game for a while now because it has psionics added. It;s Knights of the Chalice 2. It's based on 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons rules, you create a party of 6, and then its turn-based combat as you explore the map and story. It's 2D graphics, so never going to compete there with modern games, but worth it with its old school D&D feel.
It's a bit pricey right now at $45, but certainly worth a look at when the price goes down.

Yeah, first pass through was a couple of really easy hours passed away.
I can see where repeats of the same story arc might be less engaging but, while the narrative aspects are still fresh at least, seems like a really easy game to lose several hours in at a time.
$18 during the sale, I figure it'll be very easy to get my money's worth from it (and even easier sharing library access to Will)

I have the 256GB version. I love it! I use it every day. It's played all the games I've tried so far flawlessly, though to be fair I'm not a huge player of triple A games or anything. The majority of my time so far was spent in Lego Batman 3 and now for the past couple weeks NBA 2K22. I also tried some other games for short stints, like Hades, Scribblenauts Unmasked, and Brutal Legend. I'm going to try Civ 6 next.

I've played Old World since early on on Epic, gonna fire it up again with the DLC. I really liked the "order" system and the CK-lite ruler/family stuff. (I tried to fire up a new CK2 game the other week and it was just so much stuff at once I said screw this and went with EU4 instead since I didn't feel like committing to putting in 100 hours haha) Pre-determined settlement sites take a little getting used to, but those plus locations getting names (and the ability to name them if you find them first) makes it feel like a real unique world with some character. It did bog down some mid-game once you've explored the map unless you're at war or preparing for a specific one, especially if it's a more crowded map, and some of the ruler goals were repetitive but it was early access then so we'll see if it's more fleshed out now. The order system also makes it impossible to automate some tasks during those slower periods, so it did get tedious just telling different units to go collect from a tile every turn iirc.
Overall I definitely liked it. Civ is the granddaddy and deservedly so, but unless you're playing on a super slow speed it feels like you get one cool tech/military advancement, and you only get a very quick time to use those units before technology has passed them by. I liked being able to stay in one era.

I agree with Bishop's assessment. There is a lot going on between the regular "Civ" like game and the "CK" family and ruler dynamic. There probably need to be more attention on the latter, because I was not really feeling any connection to those characters like you do in CK. I guess the only thing to me that really weighs as a negative is the combat system. I never really liked Civ's combat system, and that is what this is. If you really like Civ, I think you will love this.

05-22-2022, 04:59 PM
My 4 hour review is I don't see the point in playing Civ after playing Old World. Where Civ feels like it's been using the same basic formula for years and tweaking things Old World feels like they tore the 4x gameplay apart and rebuilt it from the ground up.
I agree that I haven't felt the attachment to characters that I feel in CK but I'm hoping that's because I'm still learning how to play and focused on learning systems rather than characters.
Again, I'm only 4 hours in and my opinion could definitely change, but so far Old World makes Civ feel really dated.

Having watched a good bit of Vormithrax playing Old World during development and then reading the reviews, it feels like it remains in the "gotta pass" category for me.
Reviews on Steam note the same issue(s) that I felt throughout development: there's a number of good/interesting aspects to the game, but the AI and the combat involving the AI just doesn't feel like it's there yet. ("Hidden" units that magically appear, almost "magical" production capabilities for the AI, etc)
Until that's overhauled into something that feels like more than an exercise in classic Maddenitis, I just can't see myself getting anywhere near my money's worth from this one.

There is something compelling about stepping in for another run that scratched a compulsive itch in a way that Slay the Spire didn't for me. It may have had something to do with the art style. I just like the brighter color palette as opposed to Slay the Spire's more muted tones.
I was playing Monster Train so much that I had to uninstall it to get to some other games in my library.

This is more Valve-related than Steam-related but I thought I'd try my luck anyway; I was wondering if anyone could help me pick between the Valve Index or the Oculus Rift S as like my starter VR headset. The difference would basically be between starting out modest to get a feel for the platform first, or just going all out to begin with, and getting the best possible hardware.
For now, I've just looked at buyer's guides and comparisons like this one (https://www.allhomerobotics.com/valve-index-vs-oculus-rift-s/) for help, but I'd love to hear other's thoughts on it.

Just a heads up, OOTP22 and older games will soon be no longer available for purchase (probably because PT etcetera will no longer be available because their live services back end will no longer be working with them)
Hello everyone! This is to let you know that starting soon, Out of the Park Baseball 22 (and all previous editions of Out of the Park Baseball) will no longer be available for purchase. We have made this difficult decision because the back-end provider of our live services will no longer support us, so we are not able to continue offering them for sale for new users.
If you have already purchased OOTP 22 (and/or previous versions of OOTP) then you will be able to continue to download them via your Steam library. This will only impact new purchases.
Thank you for your support!

So I got a bit of time with Terra Invicta. It's basically if you took the on the ground tactical missions out of X-Com and made the over map stuff way deeper in a sort of 4x style. It's really hard to pin down exactly what it is, but it's a game with amazing potential. The tutorial isn't good enough at the moment and it's a very complex game.
The gist of it is aliens have just crash landed on earth and you take control of 1 of 7 entities with different goals and approaches to the alien threat. You're working with the other entities on global research but also on your own to suit your own goals and needs while trying to secure funding from various countries around the world and securing control points all over the globe that allow you do launch missions, ect.

10/10 one of the best games I've ever played and I'm not a huge souls fan. I've liked the previous souls games but I have always hit a road block with them where I lose interest when I hit progression walls. With Elden Ring whenever you hit a progression wall there's always 100 other things you can go do and then come back to what was blocking you later.
What I love about it is there's no filler content. It's an open world without stupid collectables to go chase or fetch quests and other things that are just there to artificially inflate play time and create meaning for parts of the map without content. It raises the bar for open world games.
Its definitely difficult, but at no point did I feel it was unfair and despite many, many curse words yelled while playing I enjoyed the hell out if it. It very likely goes down as the best game of this Gen of consoles/pc.

If you don't like Souls gameplay I would stay away. I always liked the gameplay of those games but would lose interest at the thought of dying at boss 30 times.
The story is also difficult to follow. It's a solid story but in typical fromsoft style is presented pretty terribly. So if story is a driving factor I'd stay away as well.
It's a brilliant open world that's fun to explore with difficult (at times brutally so) combat.

Thanks. Never played Souls. I've done plenty of save scum playing other games. I am looking for a more "modern" Skyrim and was thinking Elden Ring might fit the bill. I have read Elden Ring combat is more complex than Skyrim (what's not really) so am a little worried about that.
